The McGill University Centre of Expertise and Coordination for Telehealth (CECoT) has provided hardware and technical skills to facilitate the remote delivery of consultations and medical treatment for the RUISSS covering the McGill catchment area. As part of its work with McGill’s Geriatric Medicine Division, the Centre of Excellence on Longevity has implemented a form that is optimized for requests for geriatric consultations, which can be accessed by both specialist and family physicians.

Faced with an acute shortage of geriatric physicians and specialists in managing complex cases of chronic conditions and geriatric comorbidity in the Quebec region, the CECoT and the Centre of Excellence on Longevity combined their resources to implement a process for remote geriatric healthcare consultations that can be accessed by all clinicians in the RUISSS McGill catchment area.

Objective

To test a simple, rapid remote consultation process that can be accessed by all clinicians in McGill’s catchment area seeking support inpatient evaluations, diagnosis or treatment of patients aged 65 years or older.

Actions

  • Development of the consultation request form
  • Development of the process for dealing with requests
  • Approval of the form and process by CECoT
